Never Ever Pt. 1&2

As a woman of a certain age, I catch grief from my peers because I’m completely hooked on teenaged dramas. For me they are the guiltiest of pleasure and I enjoy them immensely, at least for the most part I do. Teen dramas tend to be cheesy, overwrought melodramas that exist simply for the snark factor or creating whacky situations for ridiculously attractive people to get into that get fandom all in a tizzy. But every so often you get thrown a bone and you come across something that makes you sit up and take notice. And after the allotted 23 or 55 minutes you find that you’ve been taken on an amazing journey and you offer up praise for having been allowed to bare witness to such complete wonder.
the Never Ever 2 parter is one of those occasions that the tv gods threw one such bone.

From the very beginning sets a certain tone that you just know is going to lead to heartbreak. We finally get to see Imogen…the real Imogen. And she is played to sheer perfection by Cristine Prosperi. Imogen has so many colors and shades that you finally get to see the full spectrum of her character. In the scenes with her father we see the whimsical daughter who is raised by a man who clearly is just as whimsical, just as brilliant and just as unique as she is. That’s when the light bulb clicks on and you go “ah ha” because you come to the realization that this is the person who taught Imogen that it’s not only okay to different, but that being different is something that one should revel in. Aces Papa Moreno.

And then we have the scenes with her mother and we see an altogether different Imogen. This Imogen is fierce and ferocious. She is indifferent and cold and all that bubbly effervescence  becomes a slow boiling anger. Imogen’s mother is the complete antithesis of her dad and you see how that effects not only her relationship with her mother but with everyone else as well. Imogen clearly has trust issue that stem from abandonment issues. These are the things that inform her relationships and explains why she tends to amp up her eccentricities. It’s basically a litmus test to see who can accept her and who can’t. That girl’s more complicated than any burrito made by god or man.

Just an amazing story arc all around and everyone involved needs to be commended for a job well done…
